Summer in the City

San Francisco may have a reputation for chilly summers, but there's plenty going on to heat things up. Here are three ways to add some sizzle to the season.

Film Night in the Park San Francisco

Cinema Under the Sky

Sundance. Cannes. Dolores Park? Not quite as glamorous, but just as fun! Bring a blanket and some layers to San Francisco's free Film Night in the Park, kicking off this Saturday with the classic, Grease. Loosen up your vocal cords and get ready to sing along with John Travolta and Olivia Newton John as they boogie across the inflatable big screen. Bring your own munchies or grab some popcorn and candy from the concession stand. Then kick back and enjoy a night of alfresco entertainment, courtesy of the San Francisco Neighborhood Theater Foundation (SFNTF). The movie starts at 8 p.m.; get there by 7 p.m. for the best seats, and practice up on the lyrics for "Summer Nights": tell me more, tell me more…

Sunday Streets San Francisco

Fun-way Streets

Part street festival and part dance party on wheels, Sunday Streets is quintessential San Francisco community, culture, and creativity. This free event sees no cars thanks to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and the city government. Each month, Sunday Streets rolls through a different part of town. This weekend it's in the Mission, taking over Valencia, Harrison, and 24th streets. Break out the banana seat and tasseled handlebars, skate dance to "Thriller," or simply cruise the car-free streets, exploring shops and restaurants en route. No matter what, you'll be celebrating the city's eclectic beat. Wear your Sunday best!

The next Sunday Streets is June 20, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For a map of the route and more information visit sundaystreetssf.com. Dog-friendly!

Red White Fleet Sunset Cruise

Sea the Sights

Are you ready to embrace your inner tourist? Grab a San Francisco fleece, strap a camera around your neck, and make your way to Fisherman's Wharf for a sunset cruise on the Bay. What may seem like a touristy thing to do is actually quite a bit of fun, if you go into it with the right mindset. The Red and White Fleet's largest vessel—The Royal Prince—plays host for a two-hour journey with live guitar music, buffet appetizers, and a complimentary cocktail or soda. It's a perfect chance to strike up a conversation with your sea-mates or just sit quietly admiring views. Get up close to Alcatraz and learn interesting trivia about its history. Coast past the campers on Angel Island, the multimillion dollar mansions of Belvedere, and the houseboats of Sausalito. As the sun dips be sure to get your photo while passing under the Golden Gate Bridge. At $50 a person, this cruise isn't exactly cheap; but if you need a reminder of how lucky you are to live in this part of the world, this is a good ticket. Just don't start calling it Frisco.

TIP: The Red and White Fleet is also hosting a special twilight cruise on Pride Weekend.

The California Sunset Cruise sails from Pier 43 1/2 in Fisherman's Wharf. Summer cruises run through Sept. 6, departing at 7 p.m. No sunset cruise on July 4. No dogs.

UPDATE:
In last week's issue we wrote about hiking around Phoenix Lake. We just heard from the good folks at MMWD who informed us that many trails, including the ones we recommended, will be closed from June 14 until the fall to replace a water transmission line. It's worth the wait!
