New Moves

So you've biked a lot of paths, hiked plenty of trails, and know the ski runs like the back of your hand? Maybe it's time to bust a new move. Here are three ways to mix things up and try something new.

Hellyer Park Velodrome San Jose

Welcome to the Velodrome

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! Well, get your legs moving, that is. Track bicycling is a lot like NASCAR, only the vehicle of transport is a single-speed bike with no brakes. Sound dicey? It isn't—not under the good instruction found at San Jose's Hellyer Park Velodrome. At the Saturday morning beginner sessions, novices get a "crash course" on how to speed around the 23-degree embanked track known as a velodrome. First, the instructor will teach you to follow two completely counter-intuitive mantras: relax and keep pedaling, even if you have no brakes (the pedals don't coast; they're always moving forward with the bike). Then it's on to some pace line drills, rolling around the curves of the track. Relax and keep pedaling: Once you do catch the riding rhythm, the good times really start rolling. You'll be hanging on "the rail" in no time. Wheelies not recommended.

Don't have the right wheels? Hellyer Park Velodrome rents out quality track bikes for $5. There is a $5 fee for the Beginner Training Session, which is offered every Saturday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Rain cancels.

Golden Gate Park Disc Golf

Disc Go

There's a golf course in Golden Gate Park where you won't find plaid sweater vests and pastel khakis. The standard here is more likely to be t-shirts, skinny jeans, and Converse shoes. Disc golf fanatics—or "Frisbyterians," as they're called—bring good game to an 18-hole course set deep in the old-growth trees and meandering footpaths of the park's Marx Meadow. Ideal for both beginners and more advanced disc jockeys, these links offer a new way for locals and out-of-towners alike to experience San Francisco's beloved natural treasure. Even if you've never played, don't be intimidated: just pack a Frisbee and practice yelling "Fore!" Before you know it, you'll be hooking and slicing—on purpose—like a pro. Be sure to download and print a scorecard and course map before you tee off. Fore!

The disc golf course is located at Marx Grove in Golden Gate Park between Fulton and JFK Drive at 30th and 25th avenues. If you really want to impress your foursome, upgrade your arsenal with the 3-disc starter kit (including putter, mid-range and driver discs) available at Sports Basement. More information at San Francisco Disc Golf Club.

iFly SF Bay Indoor Skydive

So Fly

You don't have to shell out mega-bucks and strap an instructor to your back to experience the thrill of skydiving. At iFly in the East Bay, four 250-horsepower fans create the feeling of swooping at 120 miles per hour through the air; it's like being a human ping-pong ball suspended in the middle of giant and fast-blowing hair dryer. You begin by taking a quickie lesson, then step inside the cylindrical wind-chamber and follow the lead of your instructor (who is with you at all times). Focus on these pointers: arch your back, keep your chin up so you're looking directly ahead at all times, bend your legs just a bit—and smile at the spectators. Get this airy routine down and you'll be spinning 360s in no time. Well, maybe not, but you'll have a really good time trying. You have two turns in the chamber, so get your bearings on your first try, then work the crowd on the second. Geronimooooooo!

iFly SF Bay, 31310 Alvarado-Niles Rd., Union City; 510-489-4359. Open Monday–Friday 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. A first-time-flyer package is $55.

Online match-ups, blind dates, the bar scene…dont let 2012 be another dating-scene dud. Instead, join the Team! Team In Training (TNT) that is.
