Yosemite in 36 Hours

Got a spare weekend? Take a quick trip to one of the icons of the outdoors. With the waterfalls rushing and dogwoods blooming it's time for Yosemite Valley in 36 hours. Ready, set, Gosemite!

Tunnel View Yosemite

Tunnel Vision

Yosemite's majesty is best appreciated with a little wine and cheese at the newly renovated Tunnel View. Get there before sunset and join the photo frenzy as the periwinkle-and-peach sky sinks over a wish-you-were-here view of El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome. After, set up camp or check into your hotel (options below) and grab a window table for dinner at the Mountain Room. This quaint restaurant tucked away in Yosemite Lodge offers an amazing view of Yosemite Falls—the tallest waterfall in North America. The French onion soup is delicious, the New York steak is succulent, and the mud pie will leave you licking your lips. Post-meal, take in some premier stargazing from any meadow in the valley—all you have to do is look up. Good night!

Staying in Yosemite Valley without reservations made months in advance is challenging, but be persistent. Check with the DNC (central reservations: 801-559-4884) for cancellations (which do occur). To go a step further, call the front desk of your desired accommodation to see about availability; they're more likely to have up-to-date information about cancellations. Curry Village has a range of options from standard motel rooms to cabins to canvas tent cabins. Yosemite Lodge at the Falls has over 200 standard motel-style rooms. The Ahwahnee is the nicest (and most expensive) option in the valley. Room rates vary; call or check online. For camping, check Yosemite's campground and campsite information Web page.

Yosemite Mist Trail

Hike and BBQ

Play Misty for Me: The most popular trail in Yosemite is much more enjoyable if you get an early start. Hit the classic Mist Trail no later than 8:30 a.m. to avoid the Disneyland-style crowds. There's good reason for all the happy foot traffic: The hike cuts through a canyon between Half Dome and Glacier Point and boasts a bonanza of waterfalls. Within a mile, two appear in short order: to the south Illilouette Fall rumbles 'n' tumbles, and at the first footbridge the view of Vernal Fall lures you further. Keep hiking another .8 mile up a granite staircase next to thundering Vernal Fall, through misty rainbows. Expect to get a bit wet! Dry off on a granite slab at the top before continuing for another mile up to mighty Nevada Fall. Have a snack and don't get too close to the lip: it's a 594-foot plunge down! Return via the John Muir Trail to avoid the midday crowds climbing up the Mist Trail.

BBQ and Binoculars: Dip your toes in the refreshing waters of the Merced River at one of the best picnic spots in the valley, Cathedral Beach. This day use area on the western end of the valley doesn't make it on the typical tourist track. Its wide sandy beach and unobstructed views of El Capitan make it a welcome afternoon respite. Barbecue burgers and peer up at the ant-sized rock climbers ascending the sheer face of the largest granite monolith in the world.

For directions and bus shuttle stops to the Mist Trail visit the day hikes in Yosemite web page.

Bike Yosmite Valley

Breakfast and a Bike Ride

Treat yourself to breakfast at the grand old Ahwahnee dining room. A 34-foot-high beamed ceiling, towering windows, granite pillars, and white tablecloths define the Ahwahnee's down-to-earth elegance. Cut your bill in half by ordering from the hearty à la carte menu instead of the buffet. Afterward, rent a bike from Curry Village and make a farewell tour around the valley floor. The cushy cruisers are perfect for pedaling a 10-mile counterclockwise loop—although craning up at all the spectacular waterfalls can become a pain in the neck, literally. Be sure to veer off to Mirror Lake. Located under the shadow of Half Dome, this seasonal oasis is at its most reflective in the spring. Next, cruise on to Yosemite Falls and walk ten minutes to its booming Lower Fall. Finish the loop by rolling past expansive green meadows and across Swinging Bridge.

Bike rentals start at $9.50 by the hour or $25.50 for the day. A bike map is included with your rental.
