Cold Feet

It’s big, it’s wild, it’s delightfully undeveloped. And the simple pleasures just keep on coming in Big Sur. Spend a day hiking a storybook coastal landscape in Andrew Molera State Park. Just make sure you leave plenty of time for an afternoon wind-down that will have you lounging in the river—literally! Set among sky-high redwoods, Big Sur River Inn & Restaurant (the area’s first hotel and restaurant) offers one of the best—and most original—summer alfresco experiences. Large bent willow chairs set right in the river let you chill out with a basket of sweet potato fries and a Ludwig Riesling or a Stone IPA while the gentle current cools your feet. On Sundays through September, things get downright delicious with live music and a billowing barbecue. From 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., relax to jazz mixed with a blend of folk, world, and other variations while doubling down on ribs, briskets, and burgers—with plenty of beverages to wash it all down. Altogether now: Take me down to the lazy river….

The Big Sur River Inn (46840 Highway One) is located 30 miles south of Monterey on Highway One. Sunday, August 7, features musical guest Jill Knight. The lawn and river area are dog-friendly!
