Hike and BBQ

Play Misty for Me: The most popular trail in Yosemite is much more enjoyable if you get an early start. Hit the classic Mist Trail no later than 8:30 a.m. to avoid the Disneyland-style crowds. There's good reason for all the happy foot traffic: The hike cuts through a canyon between Half Dome and Glacier Point and boasts a bonanza of waterfalls. Within a mile, two appear in short order: to the south Illilouette Fall rumbles 'n' tumbles, and at the first footbridge the view of Vernal Fall lures you further. Keep hiking another .8 mile up a granite staircase next to thundering Vernal Fall, through misty rainbows. Expect to get a bit wet! Dry off on a granite slab at the top before continuing for another mile up to mighty Nevada Fall. Have a snack and don't get too close to the lip: it's a 594-foot plunge down! Return via the John Muir Trail to avoid the midday crowds climbing up the Mist Trail.

BBQ and Binoculars: Dip your toes in the refreshing waters of the Merced River at one of the best picnic spots in the valley, Cathedral Beach. This day use area on the western end of the valley doesn't make it on the typical tourist track. Its wide sandy beach and unobstructed views of El Capitan make it a welcome afternoon respite. Barbecue burgers and peer up at the ant-sized rock climbers ascending the sheer face of the largest granite monolith in the world.
