Little Wonder

As our oldest state park, Big Basin Redwoods is officially a granddaddy, making it all the more sweet that nestled in its nape is 534-acre Little Basin—California’s newest state park. Formerly a private retreat, this is the first summer that Little Basin has been open to the general public, and that includes access to its 12 log cabins and 38 tent sites—ideal for camping in the woods—towering coastal redwoods, that is! The cabins have heat and electricity, are large enough for up to eight people, and the beds range from bunks to twins to queens. You’ll have to BYOB (bring your own blankets). They also all come with an outdoor picnic table, grill, and firepit—just the trio you need for a barbecue feast, a marshmallow roast, and a place to warm your fingers and toes while watching the night sky deepen. Tent camping instead? These sites also have grills, fire pits, and picnic tables. During the day a baseball field, sand volleyball court, tennis court, and playgrounds create a summer camp vibe. The nearby Web of Life Field School also leads guided activities such as an evening hike stocked with night-vision tricks or animal-tracking excursions for kids. If explorations beyond the grid are more your style, head out on a trek stemming from the base camp. The 1.5-mile (one-way) hike up to Eagle Rock arguably has the best view of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Or meander the Tanbark Loop Trail, a serene 2-miler that traverses the beautiful redwood canopy. Whatever you choose to do here, Little Basin equals big fun.

Little Basin State Park is located at 21700 Little Basin Rd. in Boulder Creek, CA 95006. There is a minimum of 4 people in each cabin or each campsite because Little Basin is the "group camp" extension of Big Basin. Cabins are $90/night in high season and $85/night in low season; they house up to eight. All cabins have heat and electricity. Campsites are $45/night in high season or $35/night low season.
