Can’t swing a golf club to save your life? There’s still a great reason to head to the Presidio Golf Course: pulled pork, baby! Unassumingly set on the backside of the course between the 16th and 17th holes, the General Store is much more than a general store. It’s a billowing barbecue stand and snack shop that’s open to all. Hikers and cyclists join golfers to grab some grub, including a pulled pork sandwich that's a mouthwatering masterpiece. Ben Pickering is the sizzle master and his menu also includes tri-tip, sausages, chili, and all the fixin’s. Inside the store, choose chips and a beer (there’s a wide selection, even Racer 5 IPA) to complement the ’que. The hardest part will be figuring out where to sit; there aren’t any picnic tables or chairs, though you can always try to cajole a golfer into letting you onto their golf cart (just don’t expect a ride home). Either way, the food is so good you won't mind that it's standing-room-only. And you can converse about the finer points of grilled meat with Ben. But get there soon. He’s only around for a few more weeks in October before shutting down for the season (and during rain he may not be there at all). Tri this tip!

If coming by car, park in the dirt pullout at the corner of Washington Blvd. and Park Blvd. See the white sign for Building 351. Walk down the paved road to the General Store. They’ll only be operating BBQ from 11:30 a.m.–4 p.m. Thursday–Sunday through October. Dog-friendly!
