Zephyr Cove Winter sunset

From the issue South Lake Surprise

Sunsational

After a day on the slopes or ski trails, the South Lake Tahoe après-ski scene beckons with trendy bars and five-star restaurants. But if you prefer catching a Sierra sunset during happy hour, head north to Nevada's Zephyr Cove, the closest west-facing beach to the South Lake area and one of the best places for watching the sun sink behind Tahoe. During summer, the Cove is hopping with sunbathers, but winter's chill clears the beach. Grab a front-row seat near the giant granite boulders on the north end of the cove. If you climb the rocks to snap some shots, mind your step—one slip will send you into Tahoe's bone-chilling blue water. Fix your gaze westward to Rubicon Peak ridgeline and watch the sky sizzle in shades of mango and red. Après ski for the soul.

Zephyr Cove is just 4 miles north of the California-Nevada state line on Hwy 50. Drive north on Hwy. 50 and look for the sign to Zephyr Cove Resort (which will be on your left). Turn right after you enter and park near the north end of the beach access road.
