Big Baldy

Hike Big Baldy in Kings Canyon

Giant sequoias are the main attraction in Kings Canyon National Park, but the granite peaks around here aren’t too shabby either. In fact, they’re epic. Venture down Generals Highway in Kings Canyon to prominent Big Baldy, the area's highest point, at 8,209 feet. Here you can access jaw-dropping seasonal panoramas that blend fall foliage into snow-capped Sierras via a gradual 4.5-mile out-and-back ridgeline climb to Baldy's summit. Start at the well-marked trailhead off of Generals Highway, following the dirt path through a belt of pine woodland. A series of short ascents toward the west side of the ridge lead to views of Redwood Canyon 2,000 feet below. After one mile, the first ridgeline glimpse of Big Baldy comes into view from atop a series of exposed granite slabs. Sweeping views of the Sierra Nevada paint the last level stretch before a final forested ascent to the top. The end result is 360-degree views of Redwood Canyon cloaked by a boundless expanse of pine trees and tall sequoias. The Great Western Divide's dusted peaks meld into Kings Canyon's chaparral-covered lowlands and the Sierra Nevada foothills to the west. Continue on for another half mile to catch a view of Chimney Rock, a climber’s haven. Return the way you came. Who's King of the Canyon now?

Big Baldy Trailhead is approximately 8 miles south of Grant Grove Village on the side of Generals Highway. Park on Generals Highway. No dogs.
