Heintz on Time
Hike or Bike Heintz Open Space in the South Bay

There’s a marvelous hiking and biking route linking three South Bay parks, all within the urban environs of Los Gatos. This 4-mile loop in Heintz Open Space glows green after the rains.

From the Vista and Valley View Trailhead, head up the Vista Trail into Heintz Open Space. In the rainy season, this dirt path is lined with vivid green clover and hemlock. After a short, steep climb, you’ll reach a vista point with beautiful views of downtown San Jose set against the Diablo Mountains.

Continue along the Vista Trail (several unofficial bike paths branch off, so have an online map handy). This hilly route winds through buckeye groves, and in winter, the ground is littered with buckeye seeds shooting out their alien-like taproots.

Bear right onto the Sky Lane Trail to enter Santa Rosa Open Space. Follow signs for the Santa Rosa Trail toward Belgatos Park as the route climbs uphill. Breaks in the trees reward you with fantastic views of Communications Hill and Mount Hamilton.

As the trail enters Belgatos Park, cross the creek and hop on the Ridge Trail, turning right. Climb to a grove of gnarled oak trees. This hilltop is a bird-watcher’s dream, with acorn woodpeckers, Anna’s hummingbirds, red-tailed hawks, and house finches sharing the branches.

Ready for a break? Head back down and continue along the Ridge Trail to the Belgatos Park picnic area. A playground, bathroom, and water fountain make it a perfect lunch spot. When you’re refreshed, exit via the Ridge Trail to the right of the playground.

At the intersection with the Santa Rosa Trail, turn right to retrace your route back to the Valley View Trailhead, then turn right again. This final stretch features benches and picnic areas positioned at scenic viewpoints along the route. Soak up those last South Bay views before the path leads back to the trailhead.
