The Big Chill

In LA, finding a place to chill can be the ultimate flex. So flex, in Franklin Canyon! This unexpected oasis has plenty of shade, cool lake breezes, and ample picnicking spots. Enjoy it on and easy-going 1-mile stroll along its reservoir and duck pond.

 From The Andy Griffith Show to Twin Peaks, this 3-acre lake has appeared in popular films, TV shows, and photo shoots. Its lush riparian environment attracts migrating and local birds, making it a wonderful place to birdwatch. 

 From the large dirt parking lot, head south on the narrow, paved road (on your left), passing the Sooky Goldman Nature Center and Amphitheater until you reach a small wooden staircase. Head down the stairs towards the simmering water of the Upper Franklin Canyon reservoir. 

Veer right on the single-track Chernoff Trail, which follows the perimeter of the water, leading you past tall grasses and under palm, oak and redwood trees until it empties you onto another parking area and the paved Franklin Canyon Road.  

Cross the street and find a small loop around Heavenly Pond, where it’s not uncommon to spot turtles sunbathing on branches and quacking families of ducks waddling through the water. Walk along the dam and find a flight of wooden stairs to take you back down to the water’s edge. Relish in the pleasant shade of the tree canopy before reaching the wooden staircase from the start.

The walk may be short and sweet, but this natural sanctuary is meant to be savored. Take a seat at one of the plentiful picnic tables or benches … and … ahhhh. Chill-yeah!

Find the directions to the Upper Franklin Canyon main parking area and trailhead here. Drive carefully! Stop signs within the park are photo-enforced. Make a complete stop or risk getting a high-priced ticket in the mail. Dog friendly.
