Serene Las Gallinas

Stroll San Rafael’s Las Gallinas Valley Birding Loop and Wildlife Ponds

A serene stroll alongside marshland, passing ponds and grasses frilled in seasonal wildflowers, with Mount Tam a beacon in the background … how nice. As part of the esteemed Bay Trail, San Rafael’s Las Gallinas Valley Birding Loop and Wildlife Ponds comprises about 3.5 miles of wide-open trail. That it’s adjacent to a sewage treatment plant must be said; but don’t be harsh on the marsh: fowl far outweighs foul here: white pelicans, ducks and ducklings, geese, even a resident swan.

From the trailhead take any pathways winding and looping around marshes and ponds where birds of several feathers flock together. Benches and platforms overlooking the ponds make nice spots for taking in the scenery—from Tam to Big Rock Ridge and even all the way to Mount Diablo on clear days.

Poppies and yellow star thistle currently fringe the trailside and brushy grassland sways in a mix of coyote brush, foxtails, blackberry bush, and cattails. You might even spy some fish in ponds. Las Gallinas makes a nice family-friendly stroll, including for the dog. There are some picnic tables near the trailhead, too.

BONUS FOOD & DRINK: Post-ponds, head to downtown San Rafael and check out the most authentic Irish Pub this side of Ireland … The Burren House Irish Pub & Kitchen often has live music, and its interior is true to Irish roots, from the Liscannor stone in the entranceway to the art and furniture created by artisans from Ireland. Follow up some bangers & mash with a Baileys marbled cheesecake. There’s also a brunch menu.

Trailhead. Dog-friendly!
