Santa Monica’s Most Beautiful Walk

With its sweeping views of Santa Monica Bay and the Santa Monica Pier, the 26-acre Palisades Park, perched along the beach bluffs, may be a tourist’s delight for its quintessential California vibes–but it’s just as beloved by locals. Follow this 2.5-mile loop to experience it like one.

Start on the north end of the park at Totem Pole, a 1925 indigenous artwork noted for its intricate animal carvings. Two paths wind through the park: We recommend the one closer to the bluffside fence for its scenic views.

While it’s tempting to gaze out at the ocean the whole time, the park itself, a Santa Monica landmark, has plenty of notable sights. Some of our favorites include a community rose garden, a Craftsman-style pergola, the sphere-like Gestation III art sculpture, and a picnic area shaded by enormous fig trees. You’ll also pass striking agave plants and an abundance of eucalyptus, pine, and palm trees that add to the park’s charm.

At California Avenue head down the pedestrian path of the California Incline. Midway down, take the pedestrian bridge across the Pacific Coast Highway to reach The Strand beach path.

Turn right for serene views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Malibu coastline, plus a close-up look of the beach with its iconic pastel blue lifeguard stands you’d been admiring from afar. 

Pass the playground at Montana Avenue and make a right to head back up the cliffs via a circular stairway, bridge, and an impressive 133-step wooden staircase. On this mostly flat trail, it’s the workout you didn’t know you wanted. Make a left at the top, making sure to soak up the gorgeous views, and return to your starting point.

TIP: Locals swear the sunsets in the late fall and winter are the most spectacular, so consider taking this hike an hour before sunset for the best experience. 

This hike begins at the totem pole in the northern corner of Palisades Park at Ocean Ave. and San Vicente Blvd. Directions. Free street parking can be found along Georgina Ave. and Marguerita Ave., and metered parking is available along Ocean Ave. Dog-friendly, though the stairs might be challenging for some pups.
