New Trails at Bear Creek

Hike New Trails at Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve

Two hikers at Bear Creek Redwoods Regional Preserve on a new trail.

Looking for new trails? Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve has added 170 acres of forest, grassland, and historical sites. Hike this 3.5-mile loop through the new addition.

From the Alma parking lot, head east on the Almadale Trail. This section of the park has a storied history. It was once a luxury game reserve for local millionaires before it was transformed into a Jesuit college campus. Informative placards guide visitors through the old settlement.

At the intersection with Salamander Springs Trail, turn left into the shady forest. The trail descends to Briggs Creek, where hikers share the trail with yellow banana slugs (please mind your step!).

Keep right on Beaver Trail as it winds into open grassland, dotted with occasional buckeye and oak trees. Continue onto Toad Hollow Trail, where hikers can catch sight of equestrians from the nearby stables.

After passing the turnoff for the stables, turn right onto Salamander Springs Trail, then right onto Middle Pete Siemens Trail.

Follow the trail to Upper Lake, a small oasis teeming with wildlife. Newts, bullfrogs, ducks, and herons make this lake home. Turtles bask on the wooden bridges built into the water.

Follow the trail around the pond to return to the parking lot.

The Bear Creek Redwoods Alma parking lot is located on Bear Creek Road in Los Gatos. Map

Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve is open a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset. No bikes. No dogs.
