A (River)Walk in the Park
Stroll Reno's Riverwalk from Idlewild Park

Reno’s Riverwalk winds along the Truckee River through downtown and beyond, connecting some of the city’s best parks and public spaces (Reno has more than 80 parks, so nature fixes are never far).

If you’re seeking a short, scenic walk where the small things add up to big wonders, head to Idlewild Park. It blends almost seamlessly into Reno’s Riverwalk, making it an idyllic and easy place to pair gardens, ponds, and public art with a short stroll along the Truckee River.

Parking is easy near the Idlewild Rose Garden entrance, where a large map helps orient you. Start at the rose garden, especially bloom-iful in spring and summer. From there, saunter toward the duck ponds, stopping along the way to admire the huge, intricately carved Wa-Pai-Shone sculpture by artist Peter “Wolf” Toth. The artwork is part of Toth’s nationwide “Whispering Giants” series honoring Indigenous cultures—a reminder of the region’s deeper history.
The duck ponds practically vibrate, with feathered residents waddling around, taking light flight, and landing with varying degrees of grace (some splashes are bigger than others). If you’re lucky, you might spot ducklings learning the ropes of Reno life, too. Stroll the surrounding paths or relax on one of the benches. Rising from the pond is another standout artwork: Rainbow Trout Tree, a colorful mosaic of trout sculptures.

Cross one of the small pedestrian bridges and make your way to the car-free river path. Head east and follow the Truckee River for a stretch, enjoying this flowing oasis along with cooling shade from cottonwoods.

After about a half-mile, turn around and head back into the park, looping through open lawns to return to where you started.

BONUS CAFÉ: A good walk deserves a good cup of coffee (and something tasty to go with it). The Roost is a nearby low-key favorite for a “whole latte love.” There’s also Hub Coffee Roasters—a Reno staple—and worth the slightly longer detour for breakfast burritos and caffeine fixes.

BONUS PARK AND HIKE: Ready to switch things up? Trade gardens for a wilder stretch of river down the road, and a hike locals love. Check out the Tom Cooke Trail and Mayberry Park in Reno.
